PS3 devotees have been griping all weekend about the high-end PlayStation 3 shipping without an HDMI cable. All the while, Xbox 360 owners have griped since launch that there was no HDMI on their next-gen console whatsoever.

Witness the CNET Xbox 360 complaint from back in December '05:

It didn't break my heart that Microsoft didn't include a next-generation DVD player (HD-DVD or Blu-ray), but the least it could have done was throw in an upconverting DVD player that did faux HD via an HDMI or a DVI connection. Not that HDMI or DVI is going to make a huge difference in video quality over the available component-video connection, but those all-digital connections are becoming standard on HDTVs, and the PS3 will allegedly offer two built-in HDMI ports. To be fair, Microsoft hasn't completely ruled out a HDMI/DVI cable/adapter becoming available in the future. But there was no word of it at launch.

That's all about to change. Thanks to tipster JeffN, we've learned that EBGames is now taking orders for an Xbox 360 GameStop Universal Premium HDMI Cable which will ship on December 1st for a whopping $99. No further details are available on the website at the moment.

Obviously, the HDMI between PS3 and Xbox 360 are not comparable; PS3 wins that one by a landslide out of the box. We're fully aware that we're not going to shell out $99 and watch true HD movies with the current setup. But at least HDMI will now be an option for people who are willing to pay almost a hundred dollars for it.

Direi proprio di no...

In the last 48 hours, the Xbox 360 HDMI situation has gone through quite an interesting rollercoaster ride.

Yesterday morning we reported the following:

Thanks to tipster JeffN, we've learned that EBGames is now taking orders for an Xbox 360 GameStop Universal Premium HDMI Cable which will ship on December 1st for a whopping $99. No further details are available on the website at the moment.

That seems like years ago. In the course of a few hours, Microsoft denied the existence of the cable: "Microsoft has not announced any additional support beyond component video for HD output. MS is watching the market closely and they will continue to evaluate any options in the face of consumer demand."

Ah, but the EBGames website which clearly lists the HDMI cable for $99 would disprove Microsoft's denial, right? Not anymore. The item page now reads "Sorry! We tried, but we just couldn't find the page you were looking for. If you arrived at this page through a link from another website, please contact that site's administrator to report the dead link. If you were using a bookmark, it's probably outdated, so please return to our homepage and create a new one."

For the time being, the Xbox 360 HDMI cable is gone, daddy, gone. Ironically, We sort of miss complaining about the $99 price tag now.
