Gears of War e PS3: matrimonio (im)possibile?

[...] we asked Epic President Mike Capps during GDC if he'd like to be able to put Gears on Sony's platform to perhaps increase sales even more.

"Do we wish we could take all those Killzone [players] and Resistance fans on PS3, and get them to say 'Gears is awesome'? Yeah, sure I'd love to ship the Gears trilogy on PlayStation. That would be fun. I want to be there; I want to be everywhere," he said.

Even so, Capps acknowledges that Microsoft has been immensely helpful to Epic with the Gears franchise. "I don't regret what we're doing with Microsoft. They make it worthwhile all the time," he said.

So will Gears of War ever come to PS3? Capps wouldn't say, but he did note that, "We definitely own Gears of War. This is our franchise, our IP," so the possibility is still there. However, he added, "Time and time again, when it came down to figure out what we do next with Gears, we sat down with Microsoft and they've given us really good, compelling reasons to work with them again."

"They don't just market it; they do amazing work and they have a user testing team that makes our games better, and so each time we've come to the point of 'what do we do next?' we've been happy to work with them. They help us make a better product and do some really cool marketing on the platform, so we save some money there."

Forse no: il presidente di Epic sarebbe felice di portare il suo franchise su PS3, e non solo! Tuttavia i rapporti con Microsoft sono ancora buonissimi a dir poco, quindi pur ribadendo che GoW è una IP di loro proprietà (e che pertanto possono farne ciò che vogliono) sembra proprio che i tempi non siano ancora maturi per l'eventuale sbarco di Marcus e soci sull'ammiraglia home di casa Sony.

Vado di speculazione selvaggia perchè non conosco i termini degli accordi MS ed Epic... però da come ne parla quest'ultima ("è la nostra IP", ecc. ecc.) tenderei ad escludere categoricamente che MS abbia strappato un'esclusiva perpetua/totale.

Se le cose stanno così, alla luce del successo di Gears of War secondo me la palla passa ad Epic: qualora ritenessero che il franchise abbia concrete possibilità di espandersi passando multi (o addirittura cambiando clamorosamente sponda in termini di esclusività: oggi può sembrare fantaconsolewar, ma chi può prevedere il mercato come evolverà tra due/tre anni?) potrebbero tranquillamente cercarsi qualche altro publisher, e stai tranquillo che ci mettono tre o quattro secondi a trovare chi ti pubblica Gears4. ;)

ecco.. proprio il fatto che dicano "é un nostro IP".. ma allo stesso tempo risulti ancora esclusiva MS.. dovrebbe far capire che dipende tutto dai soldi che la MS é disposta a sganciare per tenere l'esclusiva

Epic design director Cliff Bleszinski just told us at E3 that it's highly unlikely and he'd like to "bury" this ongoing question.

Here are the words Sony gamers won't want to read: "I would say in the foreseeable future there's zero chances of Gears of War being on the PlayStation 3. Can we bury that now? Seriously. It's like, we have a great deal with Microsoft, they're a great partner..."

We interrupted and alluded to what Capps had told us previously, but Bleszinski countered that it simply makes for a good news story. He remarked, "It's one of those things that would be exciting news. Hopefully DualShock would get tweaked a little bit, but anyway, enough about that."
