:look:

Epic Games VP dismisses claims that next-gen games need big budgets

Epic Games VP Mark Rein has slammed suggestions that huge budgets are required to create next-gen games, revealing that forthcoming Xbox 360 title Gears of War has cost "around $10 million" to produce.

Speaking at the London Games Summit, Rein said that it's taken a team of 20 - 30 people around two years to complete work on GOW - arguing that despite claims by some industry figures, it's still possible to create next-gen titles using medium sized teams and without gigantic budgets.

GOW, he continued, "wasn't cheap but didn't cost the crazy figures you hear other companies quoting of $20, $30 million". Rein made similar comments in an interview with GI.biz last year, where he accused "big companies like EA" of "going around trying to scare people".

When asked by an audience member how much GOW had cost to produce, Rein replied, "So far, around $10 million, maybe a little less.

"The publisher didn't pay much more than that for it... And smart developers don't

go over [deadline], let's say that," he added.

However, as Rein clarified, Epic has not had to budget for the cost of a game engine - since GOW runs on the proprietary Unreal Engine 3. He said the company was also able to save money by outsourcing to new subsidiary Epic Games China.

According to Rein, Unreal Engine 3 has "now reached the first level of performance". It will power Epic's first PS3 title, Unreal Tournament 2007, which he described as "an even more intense game" than Gears of War.

Il commento di tre blogger che hanno avuto l'opportunità di provare gears of War. L'ultimo mi fa ridere :notooth:

Three gaming blogs have gotten their hands on Gears of War and have their full impressions up. For the most part, it seems as though more things went right with the game than went wrong. It also looks like the way in which the buttons work in game isn't 100% flawless. Without further ado, here are some snippets from their impressions:

Siliconera:

You hold A to run, but you also press it to duck. If you run near a car you stop running and duck behind it. It doesn't seem like a glitch to me. It seems like the game doesn't know if you want to run or duck behind the car.

Aeropause:

The best thing about Gears though had to be that fact that it was a breeze to pick up and play. The controls were perfect and felt as if they needed no tweaking whatsoever. Moving from cover point to cover point was easy and a lot of fun. The cover system is the easiest and most innovative cover system implemented in a game so far.

2old2play:

If your teammate dies, you can run over to them and press X to revive them which gives you points. If you're the guy lying injured on the floor, you button mash the A button. The faster you press it, the slower you bleed out which will extend your revival window. However at any point while you're on the ground bleeding out, the enemy can come up and hit X to curb stomp you dead. They can also finish you off with a quick chainsaw or continue shooting until you stop twitching.
