Looking into the "Game Boy Micro"

Nikkei Electronics recently invited two experts on mobile products and decomposed Nintendo Co., Ltd.'s "Game Boy Micro" portable game console with them. The first thing they were interested in was the Game Boy Micro's cost structure.

The game console measures 50.0 x 101.0 x 17.2 mm and weighs about 80 g, an almost 50% cut in both volume and weight compared to the previous product. When we removed the Phillips screws on a side of the case body, a Li-ion secondary battery pack showed. Nintendo seems to have used standard Phillips screws only here, so users can easily replace the battery pack.

We started the full-scale decomposition from the back of the chassis. When we removed the outer case and components around the cartridge slot, seen immediately was the back of the main board. The main board consists of two pieces, which are connected with a flexible substrate. One of the experts, who is well familiar with game consoles, estimated this flexible substrate was used to absorb distortion. A user usually holds a console with both hands when playing a videogame on a portable game platform. As a result, twisting strength may sometimes be given to the chassis during the play. If only a single unit main board is used, a solder joint connecting an LSI and the board could be torn off due to a simultaneous twist from both ends of the main board. By dividing the main board into two pieces, the flexible substrate can greatly reduce such modification to the main board.

Then we tried to disconnect the main board from the console, to see its front surface, on which LSIs are mounted. However, it was much more difficult than we had expected. When one of the experts forced the console open, the main board and the LCD panel came off at the same time. The front surface of the main board came in sight. "I see, ¥12,000 is reasonable for this," said the expert, nodding his head. The very simple main board was only furnished with two large LSIs and one compact LSI.

Se non sbaglio 12.000 Yen sono circa 90 euro...

Evidentemente la miniaturizzazione ha influito notevolmente sul prezzo...forse un po' troppo

Certo che lo ammetto! 

Ma (modestia a parte  :P) credo sia anche dovuto al fatto che, tolte 2-3 persone (   ;)) il sottoscritto abbia "invitato" qui persone notoriamente "pacate" nel modo di fare/esprimersi, seppur non necessariamente tutte con gli stessi gusti.

Anche perchè in questo caso sarebbe finita tutto il tempo a darsi pacche sulle spalle...  ;)

E' un forum perfetto quindi?
No che non lo è, siamo pochini e i sonari scarseggiano (soprattutto perchè ahimè ne conosco pochissimi con la testa sulle spalle ) ma ti assicuro che in giornate come questa, dove si sforano tranquillamente i 100 post e addirittura in OT Area si fanno tre pagine di discussione politica senza finire ad azzuffarsi... beh, mi danno un grande stimolo a continuare a "investire" in questa piccola realtà.

Come si dice? Se son rose fioriranno...  ;)

A parte gli scherzi, probabilmente la consolina vendera' molto bene in jappo. In Europa invece non la vedo cosi' bene ma potrei sempre sbagliarmi.

A parte gli scherzi, probabilmente la consolina vendera' molto bene in jappo. In Europa invece non la vedo cosi' bene ma potrei sempre sbagliarmi.
