Qualche speranza per gli smanettoni "homebrew" (sviluppo software "casareccio"  :teeth:) PSP senza devkit

Good news for those of you contemplating a PSP purchase but kind of indignant about the measures taken by Sony to stop you accessing homebrew content gathered from the likes of PSPUpdates: European PSPs actually come pre-installed with the 1.52 firmware.

We had been told to expect PSPs with 2.0 software installed - including the web-browser update - but according to reports from people who've actually bought a European one (ours are Japanese) the truth is somewhat different. You're actually expected to pop in the "sampler" disc, which will then apply the 2.0 patch for you. Sneaky!

If you don't do this, you should still be able to play all the games available on day one - including the likes of Virtua Tennis, Lumines, Ridge Racer and WipEout Pure - but you won't be able to use any of the 2.0 updates. And, crucially, you still won't be able to use homebrew software because the 1.52 firmware has yet to be properly dismantled.

Hoooowever, rumours abound that a clever chap with lots of time on his hands is about to release details of a technique for downgrading PSPs from 1.52 firmware to 1.50 - the magic numbers that allow for the execution of homebrew software. We will of course let you know about that when we do.

Sony frowns on all of this of course. Actually, "frowns" probably isn't the right word - "froths uncontrollably and contemplates bloody murder" might be closer to the truth. It's upset because third-party code can in theory be used to play pirated games (in an admittedly complex manner). But if all you want to do is try out portable Linux distributions or see if Notepad can work on your portable, this might be the route to go. Or the root, if we're being funny.

Download in arrivo per Wipeout Pure (EU)

US owners of WipEout Pure can take advantage of a second Classic Pack of new content today, but while European gamers will have to wait, it should be worth it - with the entire catalogue of WipEout content due before the end of October and a Europe-exclusive Omega pack set to top things off at an undisclosed date.

The Downloads page accessible through the European version currently only lists the first Gamma Pack, and doesn't appear to recognise the content we downloaded with our American version - much as it is with US and Japanese save-games, which don't work with European games in our experience.

However, Sony has been in touch to share news of the release schedule for existing content. The Gamma Pack listed consists of all the Gamma content released in the US - which means an entire tournament. In the coming weeks, we can also expect Delta (Sept 16th - brought to PSP in association with Puma), and Classic Packs 1 and 2 (October 3rd and 16th respectively).

Meanwhile across the pond our Yankee friends are already able to take advantage of the Classic Pack 2, which opens up Odessa Keys and Porta Kora tracks, as well as two more skins.

Extreme Ghouls 'n Ghosts in arrivo da Capcom

Developed by Capcom, of course, and unveiled in the latest issue of Japanese mag Famitsu, EGnG is directed by father-of-the-series type Tokurou Fujiwara and is a side-scroller with a 3D engine and art direction said to be consistent with the early '90s vintage.

Unlike the originals, you can explore a bit, with branching and warp points built into some of the levels. You can also build up your skills as you play, learning to double-jump (and even fly, apparently), unlocking spells and generally doing more of all the things you used to be able to do.

EGnG should be playable at the Tokyo Game Show. Its announcement is also interesting because Ghouls 'n Ghosts was another of the games featured on a Capcom PSP poll nine months ago that sought input on which games to develop for the PSP. Other games on that list already headed to PSP include Devil May Cry, Viewtiful Joe, Megaman, Monster Hunter, Breath of Fire and Street Fighter.
