EDIT: Come da segnalazione di Smart Engine, Sony ha confermato che anche le PSP europee monteranno il firmware 2.00

As promised at last week's PlayStation Meeting in Japan, Sony has released a free 2.00 upgrade for Japanese PSP handhelds adding an internet browser, support for photo sharing via wireless network and the facility to set background images on the main PSP interface among other things.

An American version is expected in due course, while European PSP owners will likely be able to upgrade shortly after the console's September 1st launch.

Japanese and American production lines had to be updated recently to combat the phenomenon, with mandatory updates hastily stuffed in around the margins of new games in those territories in an effort to prevent further abuses.

The Japanese 2.00 update is available through Sony's official website (if you scroll down, you can click a "Download" button to collect the "EBOOT.PBP" file you need). It can be loaded on to Japanese PSPs by creating the directory \PSP\GAME\UPDATE on your Memory Stick Duo and then using the PSP's "GAME" menu to launch the update.

You can transfer the file to your Memory Stick Duo using an appropriate USB cable (such as one bundled with a Sony CyberShot digital camera) and a PSP set up in USB Connection mode. There are also options on the Sony website for direct download, although we haven't investigated those. Whichever option you go for, you do so at your own risk!

Earlier we reported that our shiny new "hot off the production line" European PSP comes preloaded with 1.52 firmware, however Sony has since been in touch to tell us that all European models will ship with version 2.00 pre-installed. Eagle-eyed readers will note that that means European PSPs will be protected against current PSP hackers and pirates from day one.

PSP browser released in Japan; works in US
Sony Computer Entertainment releases PSP Firmware 2.0, which lets PSP owners on both sides of the Pacific browse the Web; AAC audio and graphics support also added.

Today, Sony Computer Entertainment released the long-awaited Firmware 2.0 Update for its popular handheld, the PSP. The update gives the PSP a number of new functions, including a Web browser and support for AAC files, the audio format used by Apple's iPod. The 16MB PSP update patch is available for download at Sony's official Japanese PSP Web site.

When the Firmware 2.0 Update was announced last week at the PlayStation Meeting 2005 in Tokyo, it was (presumably) meant only for the Japanese market. However, North American PSP owners were pleasantly surprised to find that the update works fine on PSPs bought in the US. Although the download instructions on the Japanese PSP Web site require some translating, the update can detect US PSP's language settings and will automatically switch to English. However, because of the amount of functionality added, installation is slightly more complex than previous updates.

PSP owners should note that the installation of the Japanese Firmware 2.0 Update on US PSPs has not been endorsed by Sony Computer Entertainment America and could potentially cause problems. Editors at GameSpot (which also doesn't officially advocate the installation) experienced no difficulties after installing the patch and were surfing the Internet within minutes. Non-Japanese speakers will have to work off of a semi-garbled translation.

Together with the release of its new PSP update, Sony has launched its Japanese movie-download service site, Portable TV. Currently, the site offers seven free movies, but its library is expected to grow to 100 free and premium selections by mid-August.

A list of new functions for PSP system software version 2.0 is as follows:

Network
-Internet browser function (no Macromedia Flash support)

Video
-Jump function (for UMD video, UMD music)
-A-B repeat function (UMD video, UMD music, videos on Memory Stick Duo)
-4:3 screen ratio mode (for videos on Memory Stick Duo)
-Audio Options switching function (for videos on Memory Stick Duo)
-Support for MP4 (AVC) playback (for videos on Memory Stick Duo)

Audio
-Support for ATRAC3, plus sound file transfer to Memory Stick Pro Duo using Music SonicStage Version 3.2
-Support for MP4 (AAC) and WAV (Linear PCM) playback (for audio on Memory Stick Duo)
-UMD music can now be played under [Music]

Photo
-Addition of wallpaper function
-Addition of image transfer function
-Support for TIFF, GIF, PNG, and BMP file formats

Settings
-Added Korean menu option
-Added character set option
-Added "Theme Setting"
-Added "Internet Browser launch restriction" in security settings
-WPA-PSK (TKIP) security format in network settings
-Settings for Infrastructure Mode under [Network Settings] were revised to be easier to use.
-Input modes were added to the onscreen keyboard.

A partire dal 12 agosto...

Sony America says that the latest PlayStation Portable software update, released in Japan last week, will be made available for US PSP owners on August 12th.

The update, which Sony America is calling "Firmware Upgrade 2.0", adds an internet browser, improved audio/video support, options for photo sharing and adding background images to the user interface, and tweaks numerous other low-level functions.

Sony has also clarified that using the Japanese update, which is already available and known to work fine on American PSP hardware, will void the system's warranty. US PSP owners are advised to be patient with this in mind.

Once the update is available, you should be able to get it by connecting directly through a wireless access point using your PSP or by using your PC to download the file from the official US PSP website and transferring it across with a USB cable.

European PSPs will come with the update pre-installed, so there'll be no need to faff around unless you're a SINFUL HELLBOUND importer. Like we all are.

Sony Releases PSP Software Update

Sony of America has announced that its latest PSP handheld system upgrade has been made available online, patching the PlayStation Portable's operating system to version 2.0, patching a number of 'security holes' which allowed unauthorizing executables to be run, and officially opening up Internet browsing for PSP owners.

Apart from the major upgrade of the ability to use a built-in Web browser on the PSP using wireless access points, a feature that was only previously available by 'hacking' in-game browsers for other games or downloading the Japanese version of the 2.0 upgrade, the PSP upgrade also includes a number of extra features.

In particular, PSP owners can now send and receive images wireless using the PSP's 'ad-hoc' mode, and also set any currently displayed image as wallpaper for the handheld - TIFF, GIF, PNG and BMP have been added as viewable image formats. Additional video formats have also been added, including MP4 (AVC), and a 4:3 screen mode has been added for Memory Stick-displayed media.

Finally, audio tweaks for the upgrade include the ability to transfer Sony's proprietary ATRAC3 plus music format to a Memory Stick PRO Duo, and importantly, the unprotected version of the iTunes-compatible AAC format has been added to the compatibility list, as well as the WAV format.

http://blog.us.playstation.com/2009/04/20/psp-firmware-v550-update/

CitazioneThe firmware update will introduce an Information Board on the PSP system's XMB (XrossMediaBar) interface. Those of you who have a PLAYSTATION 3 (PS3) may be familiar with this feature, which displays news and updates from the world of PlayStation in a scrolling ticker in the upper right-hand corner of your TV screen. Now you'll be able to read up-to-date information about upcoming games, new content available on PlayStation Store, and other news right on your PSP whenever you're at a wireless Internet hotspot.

In addition, we'll be adding a few more enhancements with the 5.50 update:

    * Memory Stick improvements – You'll be able to create and access sub-folders on your Memory Stick PRO Duo for music, videos and photos. Separately, the available space required to download a file from PlayStation Store to your Memory Stick has been reduced significantly.
    * Internet search for games directly from the XMB – You'll be able to easily search the Internet for information about your PSP games. Select the icon for the game, hit the Triangle button, and then select [Internet Search] from the options menu to get search results based on the game title. This feature was added to PS3 with the recent 2.70 update.
    * Trend Micro trial – PSP's Internet browser is a great tool for checking out your favorite Web sites on the go, and we're teaming up with the Internet security experts at Trend Micro to make the Web browsing experience safer and more secure. With the 5.50 update, you'll have the option to access a free trial of two Trend Micro services:
Trend Micro Web Security uses Web reputation technology to block PSP owners from accidentally visiting a Web site that may contain malicious content designed to steal personal information and confidential data.
Trend Micro Kids' Safety uses URL filtering technology to prevent children from accessing Web sites that feature inappropriate content.
