CitazioneNext generation consoles, or high-end platforms, will offer a gamers a 'substantial leap over the current generation' according to Epic founder Tim Sweeney.

You'd hope so, too. Speaking in the latest issue of Edge magazine, Sweeney talks in detail on the work that Epic is currently conducting on its next-gen engine, the Unreal Engine 4.

Sweeney believes that the current crop of high-end PCs are 'representative' of what players should expect, but when the next generation of consoles actually arrives it will be a 'substantial leap' over the experiences we have today.

"We're more enthusiastic now than ever about the future of high-end platforms," explained Sweeney.

"What we're doing on high-end PCs is going to be representative of the future consumer gaming experience and it's going to be awesome. It's going to be a substantial leap over the current generation."

Not only that but Sweeney also spoke about the next-gen toolset that Unreal Engine 4 will deliver to developers, allowing even indie devs to create games easily.

"[UE4] improves art production, content creation, iteration between programmers and artists... One artist working for six months can build a game with Unreal Engine 4 without actually programming anything and ship it, something on the scale of Angry Birds," explained Sweeney.

"And when you get to digital distribution and new methods of monetisation that don't require paying huge amounts of money upfront, you have this huge potential to reinvent the game industry."

Sunto di quanto riporta Edge (cartaceo) a proposito di Unreal Engine 4, a parlare è Tim Sweeney di Epic.

Citazione di: KotakuThe Wii U uses hardware that's more or less as powerful as the current Xbox 360 or PS3. It's certainly still more powerful than your average mobile device. Epic has been unclear about the Wii U's support for UE4 in the past, with Epic co-founder Mark Rein telling Videogamer that Epic doesn't intend to bring the engine to Wii U, but that "if a customer decides they want to port an Unreal Engine 4 game to Wii U, they could."

I figured I'd ask straight-out, so during the Q&A with Rein, I did. "Will UE4 run on the Wii U?"

"Hahaha no." Rein said, with expert comedic timing. The room erupted with laughter. As the laughs died down, Rein continued: "I mean, sorry, it's not really a correct answer. We're not... we have Unreal Engine 3 for the Wii U. Right? And Unreal Engine 3 is powering all kinds of amazing games, still lots of games are being made with Unreal Engine 3. We announced today about a new Unreal Engine 3 license. Unreal Engine 3 doesn't disappear because of Unreal Engine 4. But our goal for Unreal Engine 4 console-wise is next-gen consoles. That's really what our energies are focused on. If you want to make a Wii U game, we have Unreal Engine 3, and it's powering some of the best games on the Wii U already.

"Nothing controversial, guys," he jokingly chided.

Mark Rein di Epic conferma: niente UE4 per WiiU.

CitazioneDuring the presentation the day before, another journalist asked if Unreal Engine 4 would work on Nintendo's Wii U -- a console that straddles the line between next-gen and the current one in terms of horsepower. "Hahahaha, no," he responded, which sent a wave of laughter through the room of journalists. But that's not technically true, he admitted the next day, walking back his gaffe. "You heard the stupid gaffe yesterday about the Wii U," he said. "If someone wants to take Unreal Engine 4 and ship a game on Wii U, they can! If they wanna ship an Unreal Engine 4 game on Xbox 360, they could make it happen." While that game might not look as pretty as it would on a "true" next-gen console, the new engine is scalable to a variety of platforms, including mobile.

Despite UE4's next-gen bent, the engine is built from the ground up with portability in mind. For instance, the UE3 demo running in Firefox was described as just the beginning -- Epic plans to get UE4 running in browsers in the not-too-distant future.

http://www.engadget.com/2013/03/29/mark-rein-interview-gdc-2013/

Citazione[Editor's note: Gaming industry pioneer Tim Sweeney is the founder, CEO and technical director of Epic Games, whose widely used Unreal game engine technology has defined the state of the art in gaming for more than a decade.]

Today at SIGGRAPH, NVIDIA showed our next-generation game engine technology — Unreal Engine 4 – running on their next-generation mobile GPU.

The big news here is NVIDIA's support for the OpenGL 4.3 feature set, which brings to mobile devices the same high-end graphics hardware capabilities exposed via DirectX 11 on PC games and on next-generation consoles!

And this isn't your father's GPU: NVIDIA's mobile graphics technology is built on the same Kepler graphics architecture found in its latest generation of PC GPUs. It's the same Kepler architecture on top of which we've created high-end Unreal Engine 4 PC demos, which have taken advantage of over 2.5 teraflops of computing performance.

More than ever before, we see the opportunity for developers to create high-end games and ship them across multiple platforms on a wide variety of devices, including tablet, smartphone, Windows, Mac, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. NVIDIA's OpenGL 4.3 achievements open up the mobile front of this strategy.

While Unreal Engine 3 already powers hundreds of high-quality games, from PC and console to mobile, Unreal Engine 4 has been reimagined for the future of game development. We're supporting developers on an entirely new level across major platforms with our most powerful and scalable toolset to date.

Starting today, NVIDIA's engineers are demonstrating Unreal Engine 4-powered desktop PC game content to a select group of journalists and industry insiders. It's all running on a chip no bigger than a fingernail, and is just a taste of what mobile Kepler will make possible.

Epic ha annunciato il supporto UE4 a nvidia Kepler Mobile, che sarebbe questo gingillo qua:

Secondo l'azienda stiamo parlando di una GPU più potente della 8800GTX e che consuma la bellezza di... 2W. :|
