SCREENSHOT

For those who were left with a sour taste after playing Metal Gear Ac!d while hoping for a true Metal Gear Solid title on the PSP, you will now finally be pleased. Kojima Productions has listened and is finally responding with the upcoming Metal Gear Solid Portable Ops.

Portable Ops takes place in the regular Metal Gear Solid storyline, a few years after MGS3: Snake Eater. Our main hero Big Boss, a.k.a. Naked Snake, is not the only center of this title this time around. This game focuses on how the Foxhound Unit came to be. You'll see some returning characters such as Ocelot, Paramedic, "Chicken Fox" Campbell , and many others. Not only will the birth of Foxhound be revealed, but Snake will once again come face to face with a new breed of Metal Gear. Most of the story will be told through the art of Ashley Wood in the same style as the Metal Gear Solid Digital Graphic Novel, complete with voice over work from David Hayter and the returning MGS3 voice cast. Also look out for many new memorable boss fights including ninja battles from a certain "grey" character alongside newer faces.

Single player will play almost exactly like MGS3, but sometimes may switch to controlling more than one character at any given time. You will initially start out as Naked Snake trying to muster up forces for his new Foxhound Unit. One of the new abilities Snake will have will allow him to knock out an enemy and "persuade" them to join his unit. It will be interesting to see what types of teams players will come up with,  as each individual character will have his strengths and weaknesses. Take Paramedic for example: he has a greater ability to heal than a regular soldier. That soldier, though , has better accuracy and firing range then what Paramedic could ever have. Through time, you'll build your small little army into a massive assault team. Take note that once one of your soldiers dies, he's dead for good, so make sure to keep all of them healthy.

The strongest addition to this title's belt has to be its use of multiplayer capabilities. Moving from the success of MGS3: Substinance's online mode and onto a deeper squad based format, MGS: PO will be an online gamer's best option for portable gaming. The first aspect of the squad based gameplay is recruiting troops by different means than single player. You are given the option of finding friends via Infrastructure and/or the yet to be released GPS PSP tool to find friends or foes in your vicinity. This aspect also works with the single player aspect of the game, allowing you to connect to different hotspots to unlock characters to use in single player. Once you find your enemies and teammates, it's off to battle. You have the option to play with friends to complete co-op missions or go head to head. The initial menu plays a bit like Counter Strike whereas you are given a menu on your initial weapon choices for combat before spawning into the playing field. From here, the action and stealth begins. Each player has a Surround Indicator to help navigate and find enemies, but the only downside is that it only picks up sound and shows its visual location. Stealthy quiet players can use this to their advantage and be practically invisible the entire game CQCing everyone in sight. Multiplayer plays a large role in this title, probably the largest in any MGS title ever released.

Graphically MGS: Portable Ops will be a strong contender. Very closely mirroring the visuals and speed of MGS3, it's hard to believe that this game is really for a handheld console. The fact that that this game is trying to accomplish so many things, and is actually doing it so well, is quite a feat.

If there's any PSP game that will make peoples' heads turn, either be it from the multiplayer, single player, or any other detail, Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops will be that game this holiday season.
