TGS 2005: Okami Demo Obtained

September 18, 2005 - Capcom's Okami has officially wowed gamers at two game events how. Having originally taken best-of-show honors from many at E3, the game's TGS showing is no less impressive -- in fact, it may even be the best playable title on display at the show. Easily the best looking of the later generation PS2 titles on display, and from an artistic standpoint a game like nothing ever before, Okami is reason enough to hold on to that PS2 until its release in Spring of next year.

Okami isn't just about a unique visual style (which we hereby label "Flower Shading"), of course. Capcom's packed the title with excellent gameplay, from perfect control over Okami, the white-colored wolf who serves as the lead character, to the responsive fighting system that makes heavy use of the painting play mechanics that we touched upon in our hands-on test from the Leipzig Games Convention and our original E3 impressions.

The TGS demo is actually very similar -- it may even be the same thing but in Japanese -- as the Games Convention demo, which was itself an updated version of the E3 demo. The only reason we've been able to explore further is because Capcom was handing out demo copies of the game at TGS. That's right, we now have a copy of Okami in our hands, many months prior to its release.

Thanks to the added play time, we've made a few cool discoveries. First, Okami has a day-night cycle. As you move through the world, time progresses, taking you from day to night and back again, with all the expected changes in lighting. Here's the cool part. If it's night, and you want to switch to daytime, you can run up to a cliff area looking out over town and paint a circle in the sky. The circle will turn to a glowing sun, roosters will sound off in the distance, and it will suddenly be daytime.

We're not sure how day night fits into the game exactly, but this is such a cool feature that we found ourselves rushing to switch back to daylight whenever night came about. The pen, incidentally, is used for more than just fighting and calling out the sun. Your pen strokes solve puzzles, helping to create bridges, fix broken machines and chop down trees. The few puzzles featured in the demo aren't too difficult to figure out -- a good thing, considering how many games have been ruined with illogical puzzles put in just for the sake of having a puzzle.

Discovery number two was that Okami doesn't have any load times. When you enter a building, the screen fills up with scroll graphic, but it switches back to full control almost instantly. Even when entering battle, while the screen clears, it jumps right into the action without pause. We imagine there's some streaming going on in the background, as the area featured in the demo is quite big -- likely too big to load up into memory all at once, especially given the flurry of seemingly random visual effects that accompany any event or movement.

As with the day/night system, it's hard to judge how open and expansive the game world is based exclusively on the demo. However, if an entire stage of play is as seamless as the stages in the demo, it will be easy to get lost in the world of Okami.

Our third discovery was that Okami has quite a bit of humor packed in. You can use your pen to slash away at enemies during battle, but if you want, you can bring out the pen to slash away at people as well. They'll look around unaware of what's going on (the people think you're just an ordinary wolf -- they have no idea that you're actually a god). You can even scribble pen strokes on people, covering them with ink. Outside of your ink moves, the demo features humorous characters and situations at every turn. We can't wait to play from the beginning.

The fourth discovery (and the last one for the day) was that Okami is a gorgeous game, every step of the way. Yeah, we already knew it having seen the previous demos, but this is a game whose visuals we come to appreciate even more the more we see it. You can stare and stare at the screen and still make absolutely no sense out of some of the visual effects, which bring life to the screen in seemingly random ways. The most inspiring effect (and the reason we say the game uses "flower shading") happens once you finish a major battle. Flowers burst from the ground and spread through the area.

We're sure there's plenty more hidden away in the demo, but we thought we should bring you some movies before continuing with our play session. If you haven't already been convinced, we expect that these movies will clue you in on the splendor of Okami and the amount of potential still left in this current generation of game systems when in the right hands.

comunque credo che questo sia uno di quei giochi che si possano comprare ad occhi chiusi (tranne se proprio il genere non va giù)

Difficile a dirsi...
