UPDATE 19/03/2014

===========================

CitazioneSony will reveal its Oculus Rift-beating VR headset at GDC next week, according to developers familiar with the tech.

A prototype is already in some thirdparty developers' hands, who have told us that Sony's VR headset is far superior to Oculus Rift's first incarnation, though that is expected to even out a little with the arrival of Rift's new, more advanced Crystal Cove devkit. They also said that there's little software to speak of currently, but they expect to see something from one of Sony's firstparty studios at GDC, even if it is just a tech demo.

There's also no pressure on developers from platform holder Sony to adopt the tech; indeed, the studios we spoke to were excited by the technology, but questioned its viability as a platform. The cost of VR game development and its niche appeal means that many developers will wait and see how the Sony-authored experiences fare before committing to VR game development in earnest.

Sony will reveal all at its 'Driving the future of innovation' session at GDC on Tuesday, March 18. The event's description on the GDC site is deliberately brief, but it is significant that it'll be hosted by senior SCEA research and development executives Richard Marks and Anton Mikhailov. Both men helped develop PlayStation Eye and Move; feeling out the possibilities of virtual reality on consoles appears to be a logical progression for the pair within Sony's R&D departments.

No compatibilità "dovuta" con altri VR (no standard API),

CitazioneIntroducing Project Morpheus
Posted by Shu Yoshida on Mar 18, 2014 // President, SCE Worldwide Studios

Greetings from GDC 2014! Earlier this evening, I had the pleasure to introduce Project Morpheus, SCE's prototype virtual reality (VR) system that works with PS4. Virtual reality is the next innovation from SCE that we believe will shape the future of games.

I have long dreamed about VR and the possibilities it brings in regards to game development. This new technology will deliver a sense of presence, where you as the player actually feel like you're inside the game and your emotions feel that much more real.

Our current prototype for Project Morpheus features a head mounted display with 1080p resolution and a 90 degree field of view. Accelerometer and gyroscope sensors built into the head mounted unit as well as PlayStation Camera accurately tracks head orientation and movement, so as your head rotates, the image of the virtual world rotates intuitively in real-time. Project Morpheus also features our new 3D audio technology that re-creates stereoscopic sounds in all directions and changes in real-time depending on your head orientation. In addition to PlayStation Camera, Project Morpheus works with DUALSHOCK 4 Wireless Controller and PlayStation Move to deliver an easy-to-use, plug-and-play VR experience.

The prototype for Project Morpheus is the culmination of our work over the last 3+ years as we've refined our vision for VR. This prototype will serve as the first development kit for PS4 developers that are as enthusiastic about this new medium as we are.

At GDC 2014 this week, attendees will be able to check out Project Morpheus in action at the SCEA booth through a handful of technology demos.

Citazione- The current dev kit (tentative) has a 1080p display, 90+ degree field of view.
- "It's not necessarily the final thing we're going for," but it's good for devs to experiment with.
- Tracking builds on PS Move and DualShock 4 technology, "supports forward prediction." Position and rotating head tracking: 1000HZ, 3 Meter Working Volume, Full 360 Degrees
- Second question is about if there will be a wire connected from the headset to PS4. "The current prototype is wired" with a five meter wire. They are investigating "other solutions."
- Regarding weight, as this is a prototype they're not committing to anything.
- They're only cooperating with other VR technology "in spirit." No "standardized APIs."
- "Do you plan to use eyetracking inside the device?" They're researching it.
- When will it come out? Framerate and latency aims? They won't answer. "Highest framerate we can get, lowest latency we can get," they say, jokingly. "Coming out as soon as possible."
- 'We believe Morpheus will further enhance PlayStation'. It'll work alongside the camera, and Move.
- It's still a prototype, though.
- PS Move's technology is being used in Project Morpheus to help with tracking. PlayStation Camera on PS4 is also essential. "It's almost as if it was designed for VR," he said with a wink.
- They're using the same tech as PlayStation Move - with a lot higher rate sensors, and the PlayStation Camera.
- DualShock 4's sensors and light can be used in conjunction with Morpheus. PS Move may also prove essential.
- They want it to be able to be picked up and used with no issues. Pick it up, put it on, you're in VR. Put it down, you're out. No issues.
- Finally, we've come to Content. "At Worldwide Studios, we have a really good team." Sony's own studios will "seed" the VR landscape, but they need other devs, hence they're here at GDC.
- Current focus is on PlayStation - no talking about how this will, or could, work on PC.
