annunciato upgrade del firmware che giunge così alla versione 2.0

fonte: http://psp.ign.com

July 21, 2005 - The first few updates of the PSP's core OS software have been disappointing (and utterly undesirable in the face of all of the cool yet not-always-legal homebrew applications), but Sony is finally delivering some of the cool features many of us have been waiting for. And it'll be here real, real soon.

At the PlayStation Meeting 2005 in Japan this morning, SCE announced the Version 2.0 update for PSP. This is a free update for the handheld's operating system -- the opening menu and all of that clickity-clackity stuff -- that owners will be able to bump their PSPs up to by downloading an updater from the net or from their computer, or else by playing a game disc with v2.0 on it (and, as you may have noticed, many if not all future games will require more recent updates.)

What does the new system get you? The biggest feature is that the OS now has an integrated feature for an installable wireless net browser built into it, so that PSP owners can hit up hotspots and check the web on their portable systems. The new OS will also have new file support structures, and apparently has fixed the hobbled video function of the PSP to support true AVC video playback (...and not a moment too soon, for those who have put up with the yucky Memory Stick-derived current movie playback feature) Also added in the update is the ability to trade pictures on your PSP wirelessly (ad-hoc only, unfortunately -- there's no image sharing online service just yet.)

SCE has outlined the major components of the 2.0 update, so it is unknown if any of the other features from the leaked test update (an internal demo update that slipped out to the public but never worked and disabled PSPs for those not savvy enough to know what they were doing and what not to touch) would be in this new version. That test update had roughed-in listings for a browser (that's one so far), a text reader/word processor/spreadsheet tool, mail program, a calculator, and other features. The only feature that SCE has confirmed so far is the browser -- it seems to be that we'll have to wait for that calculator.

Our Japanese correspondents are still reporting back from the event, so we hope to have further details as soon as more is available. The 2.00 update will be available on July 27th in Japan -- the surprise update will hit in just a week's time. SCEA has not made an announcement as to when the 2.00 update will be in America, but we expect our updates will be available shortly after the Japanese release, if not day-and-date.

Sony scatenata: annunci e acquisizioni

PRESS RELEASES UFFICIALI

Acquisizione di SN Systems (sistemi/middleware di sviluppo)

Tokyo, July 21, 2005 – Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCEI) announced today that it
had reached an agreement in principle to acquire SN Systems Limited (SN Systems), a leading
supplier of programming tools for game developers established in 1989 and based in Bristol,
UK. With this acquisition, SCEI aims to further enhance the development environment and
tools that the company provides to the creative community for developing computer
entertainment content for PLAYSTATION®3.
Famed for its renowned ProDG tool, SN Systems has significant assets in both
technology and experience supporting PlayStation games development, accumulated over its
10-year relationship with SCEI. A significant number of the PlayStation 2 games developers
have chosen to use SN Systems' software development tools, including an Integrated
Development Environment (IDE) consisting of compilers, linkers and debuggers. By having
SN Systems within the group, SCEI will accelerate providing powerful solutions to
PLAYSTATION 3 content development community by delivering ProDG and other high
quality development tools along with an extensive support program.
"It's a great pleasure to have SN Systems on board PlayStation," said Masa
Chatani, corporate executive and CTO, Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. "For more than 10
years, they have pioneered the development of great tools for PlayStation content creation. By
combining our experience and skills together, PlayStation will have even more sophisticated
tools to deliver to content creators around the world."

"We're looking forward to working more closely with SCEI to provide even better
tools for the developer community." said Andy Beveridge, co-founder and director, SN
Systems.

Licenza vari SKD e tool per fisica/simulazioni

Tokyo, July 21, 2005 – Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCEI) announced today that it
had entered into a strategic licensing agreement with AGEIA Technologies™, Inc. (AGEIA), a
physics tool and hardware developer based in California, U.S.A, effective July 20, 2005.
Through this agreement, SCEI obtains sublicensing rights of the AGEIA PhysX™ SDK (also
known as NovodeX™), a physics library developed by AGEIA.
The AGEIA PhysX SDK is the leading next-generation solution for creating
compelling in-game physics and has been widely adopted by various game engines, such as the
Unreal Engine 3 by Epic Games. Its multi-threaded capability makes the AGEIA PhysX SDK
ideally equipped to leverage the power of the Cell processor. The licensing agreement allows
for SCEI and AGEIA to optimize the AGEIA PhysX SDK for utilization in
PLAYSTATION®3, and will be included in the Software Development Kit for
PLAYSTATION 3. Frontline support will be provided by SCEI.
"A licensing agreement with AGEIA is a strategic move for us" said Masa Chatani,
corporate executive and CTO, Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. "With AGEIA PhysX SDK
provided as part of Software Development Kit for PS3, we believe that numbers of content
with entirely new forms of physics expressions optimizing the power of the Cell processor will
be developed."

"This agreement between SCEI and AGEIA marks a significant landmark in the
development of advanced physics-enabled games," said Manju Hegde, founder and CEO of
AGEIA Technologies, Inc. "The capabilities of the AGEIA PhysX SDK combined with the
power of the Cell architecture will give developers the tools necessary to introduce dynamic
physical properties within games that will leapfrog game interactivity as we know it today."

Tokyo, July 21, 2005 – Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCEI) announced today that it
had entered into a strategic licensing agreement with Havok, a leading physics engine provider
and based in Dublin, Ireland and San Francisco, U.S.A., effective July 20, 2005. Through this
agreement, SCEI obtains sublicensing rights of physics and animation engines for
PLAYSTATION®3 as well as the related content and debugging tools developed by Havok.
With the use of Havok's physics engine, content creators will be able to have
physics laws that govern the real world reproduced in the world of computer entertainment.
Various factors that exist in the real world, such as gravity, collision, friction and other
dynamic forces can be blended seamlessly with physically-based character animation and their
images can be rendered swiftly in real-time. Through the licensing agreement, optimized
PLAYSTATION 3 libraries of Havok's physics and animation engines as well as a wealth of
tools, including linkers and debuggers, will be included as one total solution in the Software
Development Kit for PLAYSTATION 3. Frontline support will be provided by SCEI.
"It is our pleasure to have a strategic licensing agreement with Havok," said Masa
Chatani, corporate executive and CTO, Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. "With its cutting
edge technology, Havok's physics engine is highly supported by numbers of content creators
around the world. By including Havok's technology in the PS3 Software Development Kit,
every developer will be able to utilize physics engine to create next generation content with
real and natural effects."

"We are excited and proud to partner with SCEI to provide our physics and
animation technology with the PS3 development kit," said David O'Meara, CEO of Havok.
"Havok's technology has been used by major developers all over the world in more than a
hundred games. Our agreement with SCEI opens the door for all PS3 developers to use Havok
to create spectacular game worlds with incredibly realistic special effects and interactive game
characters."

UNREAL ENGINE 3

Tokyo, July 21, 2005 – Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCEI) announced today that it
had entered into a strategic licensing agreement with Epic Games, a games engine developer
and based in North Carolina, U.S.A., effective July 20, 2005. Through this agreement, SCEI
obtains sublicensing rights of Unreal Engine 3, a complete games development framework
developed by Epic Games.
Unreal Engine 3 framework includes a programmable shaders tool, physics engine,
and GUI based physics attribution tool, along with various other tools, such as scenario
development, movie scene development, animation and particle animation tools. The most
significant among these engines and tools are the programmable shaders. By effectively using
this technology, content creators will be able to reproduce photo-realistic images without going
through a complicated calculation process. A wealth of tools contained in the Unreal Engine 3
framework will enable developers to create content to a certain level without requiring
specialist programming skills. An evaluation version of the Unreal Engine 3 will now become
available for the PLAYSTATION®3 developer community together with the Software
Development Kit for PLAYSTATION 3. Frontline support will be provided by SCEI.
"We're very happy to have a strategic licensing agreement with Epic Games," said
Masa Chatani, corporate executive and CTO, Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. "The power
of Unreal Engine 3 demonstrated at E3 was so highly received. By providing the outstanding
content development technology of Unreal Engine 3 for PS3 developer community, we believe
that many high quality content maximizing the power of PS3 will become available. "
"We're very excited to be able to work closely with SCEI to provide our complete
end-to-end solution to PS3 developers," said Tim Sweeney, CEO, Epic Games. "Now, every
PS3 developer will be able to try out Unreal Engine 3 and be productive on their very first day
of PS3 development."
