SCE Kutaragi Passionately Talks on "Future Created by Cell and PS3"

"Today, I would like to deliver stories that might sound like a dream." At "Tokyo International Digital Conference," Ken Kutaragi, President and Group CEO, Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCE), started a keynote speech in this way. Introducing the "Cell" microprocessor jointly developed by Sony Corp, Toshiba Corp. and IBM Corp. and what SCE's "PlayStation 3 (PS3)" can do using the Cell, he talked about these technologies' roadmap and what entertainment they can bring in the near future.

First, he showed a video stream demonstrating game software currently developed for the PS3. He used Sony's "4K SXRD" projector able to project 4000 x 2000 (4K x 2K) resolution images and a video stream in the "HDCAM SR" format intended for broadcasting and video content production companies. "I earnestly hope to see the home electronics industry strive so hard that consumers can enjoy such an environment at home before long," he added.

Image Rendering at 120 fps

Kutaragi then picked up video streaming frame rates as one of the potential future technologies. Compared to the current TVs' 50-60 fields per second and PCs' 72-90 frames per second (fps), the PS3 is expected to display images at higher frame rates like 120 fps, in line with future upgrades of image interface specifications.

Commenting on frame rates, he also indicated a combined use of image input and high-speed frame rate technologies. He said the PS3 will highly likely to develop to a new computer entertainment, in which, for example, the game console swiftly analyzes the meaning of images shot with a connected high-speed camera and inputs the results to a game.

Cell Enables Large Screen Size TVs to Simultaneously Display Multiple HDTV Contents

Kutaragi also disclosed some ideas of how to use high definition, large screen displays that are anticipated to rapidly penetrate the market in the near term. The ideas included displaying of a newspaper in real size, simultaneous playback of numerous HDTV contents and video chats. Above all, Kutaragi most emphasized simultaneous displaying of many HDTV contents. He insisted the Cell will enable such TVs not only to decode more than ten HDTV signals at the same time, but also to enlarge and rotate images, among other treatments.

Then he mentioned a possibility of online games using huge computer resources at distant locations. Introducing a server environment at Sony Pictures Entertainment (SPE) currently used in filmmaking, he described it as "nothing but an online game, in which users log in a server from outside." By saying so, he pointed out that filmmaking environments can be applied to online games.

Cell-based Cluster Structure Boosts Performance to 1 PFLOPS
A cluster server using the Cell was what Kutaragi proposed as a future server environment. A rack design combining 16 units, each of which consists of eight 2.5 GHz Cell microprocessors, can achieve an operation rate of 25.6 TFLOPS (tera floating-point operation per second). With 40 of these racks installed in a room, an operation rate is estimated to reach 1 PFLOPS (petaFLOPS).

Furthermore, citing a scene from "2001: A Space Odyssey," a movie directed by Stanley Kubrick, where an actor's lips are read through the window, Kutaragi also suggested the Cell's application to a recognition system. He described SCE's "EyeToy," which inputs information through a device using a compact camera, as a forerunner of such systems, and showed his expectation toward the future.
